The
Department
The
Region of Central Macedonia is one of the 13 regions of Greece and includes
seven prefectures (Thessaloniki, Chalkidiki, Serres, Kilkis, Pella,
Imathia and Pieria). It is a decentralised governmental unit aiming
at implementation of economic and social policies at the regional level.
The General Secretary is the head of the regional services which carry
out the governmental policies. These services are structured in Directorates
which are related with planning, construction of public works, environmental
management as well as the management of natural resources. The Directorate
of Forests is one of the ten (10) directorates of the region of Central
Macedonia with jurisdiction on conservation and management of public
forests and forest lands including rangelands. It is structured in three
(3) sections corresponding to planning and forest development, protection
of forest and forest lands, and forest management. The Directorate is
supervising the work carried out by the extension Forest Offices stationed
in each prefecture. For the public rangelands of the region specifically,
this work includes control of grazing pressure, protection of high forests
from overgrazing, range development and vegetation improvements. In
addition, the Directorate is drafting the annual planning for range
development of the region and assists in implementing the governmental
policies by each prefecture through its extension Forest Offices.
GeoRange Within the project, the Directorate of Forests acts as an associated contractor to ATUH and will also be closely linked to FRI. As such it will provide the necessary cartographic and statistical information needed for its implementation as well as about the current management status of public rangelands. In addition, it will serve as a contact interface between the AUTH and NAGREF researchers and the extension officers and the farmers who are using the rangelands. At the final stage, it will incorporate the results of the project into its management policies and actions for the sustainable development of the rangelands of the region. Similar to the Dirección General de Recursos Forestales RCM is involved in the project as an end-user supporting the consortium with respect to the identification of planning requirements meeting the needs of administrational authorities. |
