The
Department
Located in Ispra (Italy), the Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) is one of the seven institutes that constitute the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. The mission of IES is to provide scientific and technical support to EU strategies for the protection of the environment and sustainable development. Prime objectives of IES are to investigate the level and fate of contaminants in the air, water and soil; assess the effects of these contaminants upon the environment and individuals and promote a sustainable use of natural resources, including sustainable energy supply, to prevent further degradation of the environment. Its integrated approach combines expertise in experimental sciences, modelling, geomatics and remote sensing. This puts the institute at the forefront of European research for the attainment of a sustainable environment. The mission of the Soil & Waste unit is to carry out research in support of EU policies concerning the protection of soil resources and regulating the environmental impacts of waste management strategies. Strong emphasis is put on monitoring and modelling land degradation processes leading in their final stages to irreversibel loss of soil resources and desertification. The scientific unit staff contributing to the project have long year expertise through their involvement in numerous projects such as:
GeoRange
In the project, LUC will share the bulk data processing and interpretation of EOS data with FEUT. It will be responsible for the definition of the GIS data model, the assessment of data availability for the project sites and the specification of required information layers. Further emphasis will be placed on deriving vegetation and soil-related state variables from calibrated and geo-coded satellite data, and on the analysis of satellite data with low spatial, but high temporal resolution to detect range phenology dynamics. |
