The Department

The Forest Research group within CEAM (Centro de Estudios Ambientales del Mediterraneo) has a large experience in the analysis of ecosystem responses to fires and on burned ecosystems restoration. The main focus of the group's research is to develop techniques for restoration of Mediterranean ecosystems in accordance with environmental conditions and the degree of degradation of each particular site. The research includes soil and vegetation sampling in the field, and laboratory analysis, and the design and monitoring of forest restoration projects making use of plantations and fuel control actions, among others. CEAM has developed a Programme on Restoration of Burned Wildlands and Management of Forests promoted and funded by the Generalitat Valenciana (Regional Government) for the period 1991 to 1995 and 1996-1999 for its successor. In this context it has established strong communication links with the Forest Administration and SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) working in the sector, and accumulated large expertise on methods for forest plants cultivation and planting. In addition, the Forest Research group disposes of a number of instrumental and field installation facilities to supply the experimental data required for concrete applications. The group has so far participated in a large number of research projects, such as REMECOS, DELFI, LUCIFER and REDMED.

GeoRange

In the GeoRange consortium, CEAM has assumed the responsibility for developing the conceptual model for multi-functional rangeland assessments. Besides it will collect the data required for the creation of the spatial data base in the Ayora test site and is in charge of the definition of alternative management strategies for this site. As a consequence of the interdisciplinary approach followed in GeoRange, the group will establish close communication links with the teams responsible for the spatial data processing, and work together with the local teams from other test sites to ensure the exchange of expertise and the support the definition of innovative alternative management concepts.
